Given the complexities surrounding maternal nutrition, exploring dietary practices, barriers, and coping strategies among pregnant women in Ekiti State is essential for improving maternal and fetal health outcomes. This qualitative phenomenological study examined the lived experiences of pregnant women regarding their nutritional behaviours and the factors shaping them. Fifteen pregnant women receiving antenatal care in selected primary healthcare centres across Ekiti Central were purposively recruited, and data were collected through semi-structured, one-on-one interviews. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analysed thematically using NVivo. Six major themes emerged: awareness of dietary guidelines, access and availability of nutritious foods, influence of work or daily schedule, stress and eating habits, barriers to healthy eating, and strategies to maintain a healthy diet. Findings revealed that although participants were aware of recommended dietary practices, adherence was hindered by financial limitations, seasonal food scarcity, work-related time constraints, pregnancy-induced physical discomforts, and emotional stress. Nonetheless, women adopted adaptive coping strategies such as budgeting for affordable local foods, meal planning, seeking guidance from healthcare providers, and prioritising rest. The study highlights the need for improved nutrition education, strengthened community and family support, and policies that enhance access to affordable nutritious foods.
