Systematic Review of Users’ Satisfaction with Housing Schemes

Systematic Review of Users’ Satisfaction with Housing Schemes

Date of Publication : 30, Oct, 2025

This study aims to systematically review global literature on residents’ satisfaction with housing schemes, identifying key factors influencing satisfaction such as design, socio-economic conditions, infrastructure, amenities, and policy frameworks. Employing the PRISMA protocol, the study ensures methodological rigour through structured data search, screening, and quality appraisal. A comprehensive search of databases including Scopus and JSTOR covered peer-reviewed and grey literature published between 2016 and 2025. Inclusion followed the PICO framework, focusing on public housing residents and outcomes linked to housing quality, services, and resident perceptions. The final selection comprised 18 high-quality studies. Data were extracted and synthesised thematically using a narrative approach, revealing key trends, regional disparities, and best practices to guide future housing policy and resident-focused development strategies. The reviewed studies collectively examine residential satisfaction across diverse housing settings, highlighting the roles of design quality, social environment, and policy effectiveness. Satisfaction is shaped by physical attributes like space and infrastructure, social interactions, community engagement, and subjective perceptions. In subsidised and older neighbourhoods, features such as fitness facilities, community bonds, and participatory governance enhance satisfaction. Policies directly providing housing, especially public rental options, tend to yield higher satisfaction than allowances. Design aspects such as spatial layout, ventilation, and eco-friendly features further influence contentment. In developing regions like Nigeria, implementation gaps and urban planning challenges reduce effectiveness. Overall, inclusive design, community integration, responsive policies, and sustainable infrastructure are key to improving residential experiences and well-being.
